We’ve always heard that some of the basic and most essential needs for mankind are food clothing and shelter. Though this is very true, there are a few other things that should rank high on the list. Some of these have been made more evident during this season of quarantine.
What are they you ask? Well, one is our need to live. With fear heightened because of COVID-19 and many sadly passing away, it is not much of a surprise that many have kicked into survival mode.
In the beginning, shelves were empty and even now 6 weeks in, shops continue to control what we buy. Masks are extremely expensive and let’s not even forget the hand sanitizer issue. Many are isolating themselves and hoping to survive this.
As believers, there is one thing we can look to and that is the cross of Jesus Christ and how it fulfils our very need for life. Jesus’ death and resurrection brought us out of the bondage of sin and into freedom. The curse of sin brought death (Romans 6:23), but Jesus brings life and life more abundantly (John 10:10). The life we gain in Jesus is more than one for now but one for eternity. Hold on to your hope in Him.
Again, isolation is no fun, especially living alone. One thing that the cross fulfils is our need to belong. Many live alone. Some are even separated from their loved ones during this time. We learn that we are adopted into God’s family when we accept Jesus.
In this our need to be loved is also met because we begin to understand the never-changing love of God. This same love that caused Jesus to die for sinners (Romans 5:8). He continues by placing us where we can worship, serve and fellowship.
I don’t know about you, but I am grateful for a church family who makes an effort to see that we’re not alone in these times. Friends, this is all because we serve a God who supplies all our needs (Philippians 4:19).
